Journey vs Destination

If you're much of a road trip person this concept will come a bit easier. Road trips like most of life is not actually about the destination but rather it is about the journey. When I think of the most awesome road trip I'd like to take, I think of those fun road trips that do have a destination but it's more about the things a long the way. It's about stopping and seeing the world's biggest ball of yarn or checking out the best waffles at the Waffle Hut. It's about stopping and buying fruit on the side of the road or checking out random museums along the way. If you've ever seen the movie 'Elizabethtown' then you know the kind of road trip I'm talking about (when he heads home in the end of the movie). It's way more about the journey than it is the destination.

Life is about the journey and not the destination. Yes we have to have a destination, but it's about the day to day life and the people and places along the way. I am one of those practical people that likes to know the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I want to see all of the picture and not just a piece of it. Life however is not always like that.

In my struggle of transition and moving and just life right now I get so caught up in the destination. And even as I looked at these people the other night that have spent 50 years in ministry, I was looking at their destination and not their journey. But it's about their journey and not where they are now. It's about the ministries they've lead over the years, the lives they've touched, the churches they've pastored, and chasing Jesus each day along the way.

Too often we get caught up in the destination and don't even notice the journey. We focus on the future and forget where we are and the people around us right now. There is a Rob Bell 'Nooma' video about Moses and the burning bush and how in our lives we miss the burning bushes day in and day out cause we're too focused on the future and where we're going. It's about the journey and not the destination.

There is a song from the new 'Hannah Montana' movie that I'm really liking this week. Yes it is Hannah Montana but the words are truth whether you like her or her music. Here are the words:

I can almost see it
That dream I’m dreaming but
There’s a voice inside my head sayin,
You’ll never reach it,
Every step I’m taking,
Every move I make feels
Lost with no direction
My faith is shaking but I
Got to keep trying
Got to keep my head held high

There’s always going to be another mountain
I’m always going to want to make it move
Always going to be an uphill battle,
Sometimes I'm going to have to lose,
Ain’t about how fast I get there,
Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side
It’s the climb

The struggles I’m facing,
The chances I’m taking
Sometimes they might knock me down but
No I’m not breaking
I may not know it
But these are the moments that
I’m going to remember most yeah
Just got to keep going
And I,
I got to be strong
Just keep pushing on,
cause

There’s always going to be another mountain
I’m always going to want to make it move
Always going to be an uphill battle,
Sometimes I'm going to have to lose,
Ain’t about how fast I get there,
Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side
It’s the climb

Until then......
