Seen

I noticed that my roommate last year always misused the word 'seen.' For instance she would say "I seen that movie the other day." I always just assumed this was a northern thing or something.

But lately I have realized that it is not a northern thing, but rather most people misuse this word. I've heard it misused so much lately that I have almost begun to question myself. I am not the biggest grammarian, but I do know proper English.

I wonder why so many people misuse this word. It seems that they have confused 'seen' and 'saw' and 'have seen.' If my grammar is still in tact, then the proper wording would be: I saw that movie the other day. or I have seen that movie. But the sentence "I see that movie the other day" is incorrect.

If I am indeed not up to par on my grammar, please let me know. Maybe if I am the wrong one, then it will stop irking me so bad when people keep using 'seen' in that capacity.

Until then......

"Seen" isn't technically grammatically correct! The past tense of "see" is "saw". It's just part of dialect to drop the "have" from the sentence! It started in the South, but when Southerners migrated, it was brought North so it's more widespread now.
