Who We Are

My last post mentioned that I was reading the book "Confessions of a Non-Barbie". When I sat down in Chili's the read the other night, my waited glanced at my book and remarked that it was an interesting title.

I am not a woman who really struggles with self-image or insecurities. Don't get me wrong, I have my own battles I face, but it's not the usual self-esteem and image problems. So when it comes to that topic I'm usually doing pretty good. I'm ok with eating alone in a restaurant and I don't hold back on things in life because I'm single. I go see movies I want to see whether or not someone goes with me. I've driven cross country a few times a lone. And one of my favorite vacations ever was when I spent a few days at a bed and breakfast in South Africa by myself. Can I just say that candle lit dinners in a restaurant with C.S. Lewis in hand is pretty darn fabulous!!

All that to say I get a little stirred up sometimes about helping other women and girls find the type of confidence that I have. Not that I know it all or anything, but I have a confidence that really comes from knowing Who made me and the purposes that He has for me. I have confidence in my Creator which gives me confidence in life. I know who God has made me to be and the way He knit me together in my mother's womb and all the quirks and flaws that come with that. And still I'm ok because I know Who made me. I long for other women to find that too. To know that who they are is beautiful because that's how God made them.

"Confessions of a Non-Barbie" is the type of book I'd write if I were to write one. It wasn't earth shattering for me but it was raw and relates well to people. And I loved her analogies! I highly recommend the book for any woman, even if this isn't your area of struggle because it can help you relate to and help other women.

Another thing on this topic that I've really enjoyed is Jessica Simpson's show "The Price of Beauty." I know it's Jessica Simpson, but honestly I've always liked her. I like her music and I used to love to watch the show "Newlyweds."

This show takes her and two friends around the world to different countries to see what beauty is in their culture. It's so good. Some cultures view dark skin as beauty while others view lighter skin as prettier. Some think heavy women are more beautiful while others are dying to look as thin as possible. It's such a good depiction of how true beauty comes from within. And beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone is beautiful in their way. That's not some lie to make some women feel better about themselves, that's the truth.

I think the show only had one season and it was a short season ending with a "debriefing" of what they learned and a fashion show in L.A. You can find the season on hulu.com and I highly recommend it as well. And the theme song is pretty good too. Jessica sings it and the chorus says:
"We're beautiful
Our flaws and all
They're beautiful to me
It's who we are, it's who we are
It's who we're meant to be
Now never change a thing"

Check it out.
Until then......
